What is InTheMO?

InTheMO is a living, "best-of" guide to the coolest stuff out there - the simplest way to find the best spots around the world and share them with your friends. Our team of tech, travel, and local search fanatics has been working non-stop for three years creating an online guide to your world like nothing you have ever seen. We've put together a vast list of top-notch videos and guides to different cities, featuring the best places around by people that just plain get it. With this information we have created the first worldwide city guide that really gets to know you. Our system learns what you’re into and recommends spots based on your tastes. The more you use the site, the smarter the system becomes, and the better the recommendations get for everyone.

Recs

Recs are recommendations. They are your tool to tell the MO system how compatible you are with a particular business. Here’s how it works:
Let’s say you went to a great bar last night. You’d like to check out some other bars similar to it. Go to InTheMO.com, find the spot using the search bar at the top, and click the “Rec It” button on the business' profile. Rate it what you would like (70-100% if you had a good time). Doing so will tell our system that this is the kind of place you like to visit, and our system will find and recommend similar places to you.
Your Recs are a simple way to share your recommendations with friends and to improve the recommendations provided to all users of the site. Recs generate predicted compatibility with other spots that you may not have been to. The more spots you rate, the more accurate our Personalized Recommendations Engine becomes at predicting your compatibility with businesses all over the world.

Personalized Recommendations Engine

Take a few minutes to rate 15 of your favorite or least favorite spots in any city. We promise it will be worth the two minutes you spend, as our Personalized Recommendations Engine compares your ratings with the ratings of all our other users to serve up spots you’ll love in cities around the world. The more spots you rate, the more intelligent your personalized recommendations become, and every rating you make will help us deliver better recommendations to the whole community. How’s that for team spirit?

What is Street Cred, and why do I want it?

Street Cred are points you can earn by being active on the site. The more Street Cred you have, the more trustworthy your recommendations will be. You can compete with your friends to see who knows the most about the places and things you love. You can earn Street Cred by Rec'ing spots or items, watching videos, sharing on Facebook or Twitter, and more. Some Street Cred counts towards becoming an expert on our Expertise Leaderboard. People on the Expertise Leaderboard are the most trusted and knowledgable recommendation makers on InTheMO. You can become an Expert in a certain category (i.e. Burgers, Nightclubs) and/or you can become an Expert in a city (i.e. Los Angeles Expert). Your activity on the site and the Street Cred you earn along the way will determine what kind of Expert you become. Learn more about becoming an Expert here.

Leaderboards

There are two leaderboards on InTheMO. The "Best-of Leaderboard" features the spots with the most recommendations in their categories, cities, and worldwide. These spots are the most sought-after on InTheMO, and they will always be competing for the most Recs and the highest position on the leaderboard. The "Expertise Leaderboard" lists all of the Experts in their given categories, cities, and worldwide. Experts are ranked by the amount of Street Cred they've acquired and are considered to have the most trustworthy recommendations on the site.

City Hosts

City Hosts are taste-makers and trendsetters in their various communities. We’ve picked the brains (not litterally) of the most legitimate people in cities all over the world. Our City Hosts are at the forefront of the culinary experience, art, music, film, journalism and culture...just to name a few. You can Follow City Hosts and see what spots they are into and what they think makes their city tick.

Cities

Browse cities in the U.S. or around the globe. Tell the world what you know about the coolest places in every city you have ever visited. We created videos in cities worldwide to show you the spirit of the city from the people who know it best. Click the “Videos” tab at the top of the page to view our city videos. Not all cities have spots yet. If you are in a city without any spots, you can help by adding your favorite spots.

Guides vs. Wish List

Guides are an interactive way for you to group businesses into categories or lists. You can then share your custom Guides with friends. Have a favorite route for bar-hopping in Honolulu? Share it. Have you scouted all the best bagel places in the West Village? Hook up your friends and strangers with the inside scoop. You can create a Guide of your favorites and refer your friends to it when you want to go out and are looking for ideas. You can add spots that you have Rec’d into any custom Guide, then organize/order that list in any way you please. Where Guides are for business veterans, Wish Lists are for dreamers. The businesses contained on your Wish List can be places you have rated or ones you really want to check out. Wish Lists are a great way to plan a vacation or a night out with friends.

What are Friends and Followers?

Friends and Followers are people with whom you share experiences on InTheMO. When you follow someone on InTheMO, they will appear in your list of Friends, and spots they Rec appear as posts in your “My Home” Message Center. You will appear in their list of Followers until they decide to follow you, at which time you each will appear as Friends of each other. You can invite friends from your Facebook, Twitter, email contact lists, instant message lists, and vCards. When you invite someone to join InTheMO, they are automatically listed as your friend on the website.

I can’t find my favorite spot.

If you just created a business and can't find the business in our search results, please give the system 24 hours to populate your newly-created business in our system. If you are searching for a business and can't seem to find what you are looking for, just create a new business and add all the information you can about it, including pictures. This will make it easy for other users who may also be looking for the same business as yourself.
